“Where the hell is Nickie?” Lennie burst into Serena’s office. “I demand an answer!”
“Calm down, Lennie. Nickie is fine. Brant is with her at the Clinic and will bring her here as soon as the exam is finished.” Serena pointed to a chair. “Now sit down, take a deep breath, and relax.”
She plopped in a chair, knee jumping. “Fair warning, I’m going to kill Ryan Jones.”
“No you won’t. I will deal with him.”
“That bastard tried to kidnap her and you want me to do nothing?”
“I want you to continue your work on that building and tunnels. Remember, the Archive has its own way of dealing with people who break our laws.” She poured two glasses of whiskey and held one out.
Lennie grabbed the glass and downed the contents. “Who is he working for? At least tell me that.”
Serena sipped her drink. “The Council of the Crimson Moon, which is led by Reginald Aston. He’s been busy buying up politicians in the city by the score. I also think he’s paid off a few high-ranking officers in the police department, but have no proof as yet.”
“How did Ryan know where to find Nickie?”
“Brant found a GPS device in her pack.”
“Son of a bitch! I bet I know when he planted that. The first day we began exploring that building.” She held out her empty glass. Serena refilled it. “I better go through my pack and bags.”
“Have your car checked too. For some reason they want to keep close tabs on Nickie and you are her Keeper, which mean keeping an eye on you as well.”
The door swung open and Nickie entered, pale but unharmed. “Lennie?”
A small cry escaped as Lennie bolted from her chair and wrapped her arms around her, holding her close. Brant entered and closed the door.
“I’m glad you’re all right.” Lennie drew back and ran her fingers through Nickie’s hair. “What happened? What did that bastard say to you?”
“He was waiting at the elevator when I came up from the lower level. He told me that Brant wanted to see me. When I told him I wanted to confirm it with you first, he jabbed me in the arm with a needle and I got real dizzy. Next thing I know, someone is yelling and Ryan is on the floor of the parking garage holding his nose. Shannon is the one that saved me.”
“What did the doctor say?”
“I’m not supposed to drive or have alcohol for the next twenty four hours. Other than that, I’m fine.” Nickie kept an arm around Lennie.
“Serena, could you arrange to have my car and apartment checked for bugs and other trackers?”
“I’ll send my own security team to deal with that. Nickie has already confirmed none have the taint of the shadows. I should have dealt with Ryan when I heard rumors about his gambling problem. Things like that can be exploited and I believe that is what happened in this case.” She made two calls. “All set. I alerted the apartment building manager to expect the team from the Archive. Until they finish, you and Nickie should return to your office and relax.”
With a nod, they left.
A vase shattered against the wall. “That fool! I want you to get Ryan Jones by whatever means necessary and bring him to me!” Reginald flung himself in the chair. “How could anyone be so stupid and try to kidnap Nickie from the Archive itself?”
Gillian stared straight ahead. “We know where he is being held, but it won’t be easy to get to him.”
“Do what you must. Set the place on fire if you have to. Bring that bastard to me!”
“Yes, sir!” She hurried from the room.
A low chuckle emerged from the corner of the room. “I think I will help in this instance, Reginald. Gillian is good at what she does, but even the Archive will be more than she can handle. I will provide a suitable distraction so her team can get in and get out.”
