Writing Tip — 54

A few tips to help you improve your writing.

  1. Read. I can’t stress this enough. Read books. Good books, bad, books on writing, books on editing, history, science. Increase your knowledge from all that you read.
  2. Join a great critique group. The group should teach you about writing, grammar, and the members should offer helpful comments, not just say ‘Oh, this is great, you should publish it.’ Writers World on Facebook is the best critique group around for learning what you need to know about story structure, perspectives, grammar, and punctuation. There are a lot of groups on FB that claim to be elite when it comes to critiques, but there’s only one where you actually learn what you need to know.
  3. Be observant. Look up from texting on your phone and look around you. Stud the people nearby and the activity going on around you. Pay attention to strange noises you might hear, or odd bits of conversation you might overhear. These can lead to interesting story ideas or characters.
  4. After you finish your first draft, set it aside for a couple of weeks and work on another writing project. Then go back and read through what you wrote with fresh eyes.
  5. Find some great beta readers to help you find plot holes and inconsistencies in your writing. Id they make a comment an you don’t understand what they mean, ask them to elaborate.
  6. No matter what, keep writing. Write every day. You can write just one hundred words or a couple of thousand words. The important thing is to keep that writing muscle toned.
