Writing Tip — 49

Anna Dobritt -- Author

When you sit down to work on your first draft, the important thing is to get the words down. Don’t over think things as you write, since that will slow your writing down. Let the words flow onto the paper or the screen. One hundred words, five hundred words, a thousand words, just let them flow. Don’t stop and go back to fix your grammar or spelling errors, keep writing. Once you have the chapter or scene finished, then you can go back and make corrections. Don’t do a line by line edit while writing your first draft. It’s important to keep the story going. Whether you are working from an outline or writing by the seat of your pants, the first draft is always going to be a rough draft and will need to be edited. Getting the words down is the only thing that matters at this stage.
