Flash Fiction — Inhale



Water filled the car, and Julian’s heart pounded, his breath coming in gasps. With a bump, the vehicle settled on the lake bottom, and he struggled to unbuckle the seat belt. Water reached his chin. Julian took a deep breath and ducked under the water. It’s peaceful here passed through his mind, as he released the seat belt. No bosses, no screaming kids, no bills. Once free he tried the door, but it wouldn’t budge. Kicking the cracked windshield did nothing and his lungs burned. His vision faded and a voice said, “Let go.” He inhaled.
