Writing Prompt — 2
You’re a safecracker; you thought you had seen all the treasures and odd objects in the world. Then you open one special vault. No more than 300 Words. Have fun with this one.
The security system for the penthouse proved no problem to me. Once I bypassed the system and set the cameras on a loop, it only took a moment to pick the locks. Rumors had spread in the underworld that Mr. Astin Andrew Jones had the largest collection of gold coins in the world. The gold alone would set me up for life.
A wall panel in the study slid aside to reveal a vault door. Thanks to the maid I bribed, gaining the code was simple. Eight numbers later the sound of bolts sliding back broke the silence.
For a large door I found it easy to pull open. Lights flickered on and my jaw hit the floor. A corridor extended thirty feet into the safe; to the left shelves contained priceless artifacts, gold coins from different time periods, and jewelry. The shelves to the right, however, made my hair stand on end. Large jars lined the wall, each one held a human head. Yes, you read correctly, human heads. Each one preserved in a clear liquid. Their eyes were closed and they gave the impression of being asleep.
I shook off the shock, grabbed a bag from my pocket, and grabbed the gold coins and jewelry. As I worked, I swear someone stared at me. After I added another set of coins to my bag, a swishing sound made me turn. The three heads directly behind me had their eyes open and occasionally blinked. I screeched and bolted from the room, leaving behind the gold and my sanity.
