“Come on, Scarlet! Why are you teasing me?” Mickey re-buckled his belt.

Scarlet stared at him as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I told you we have a job to do if we want to keep on living. We can screw around later.” She pushed past and picked up a hammer and crowbar. A former sergeant in the army, Scarlet kept herself in shape and enjoyed the looks and comments from those she met. Her eyes held a hint of anger. “I don’t like it when the boss calls and tells me the two of you screwed up.” Scarlet resisted the urge to scratch at her latest tattoo — a gray jagged-blade dagger dripping blood.

Bernie called from the other room. “Nothing in the walls or floors here. I’ll check the smaller bedroom.”

“I’m glad this house has no close neighbors,” Scarlet said as she slipped the end of the crowbar between two floorboards. With a grunt, she pried them up, nails screeching against the wood.

Bernie entered the to grab a heavier hammer from the bag of tools. “Hey Scarlet, you think the writer has the stuff?”

“If she doesn’t, no doubt she soon will. JC was a sly old fox, no matter what Mr. Astrid says. He knew exactly what he was doing.” Two more board came loose and she tossed them aside.

“What happens if she gets the disk and the ring? I still don’t understand why they’re so important.” Mickey grabbed a crowbar and smashed a hole in the wall beside him.

“From what I understand, there are seven disks. If she gets a certain disk and performs a ritual, the disk attunes to her and she’ll use it to find the last one. Mr. Astrid is not sure who has the other four disks.” Scarlet moved to another section of the floor. “I have no idea what the ring’s for, but I know the boss wants to get his hands on it.”

“Does the disk glow or something?” Mickey pulled off a section of plaster, coughing at the dust he raised. “Shit!”

“Don’t know. No one bothered to explain it and I’m not sure I want to know more.” A creak from the back door made her tense, and she laid her hand on a Glock. She glanced into the kitchen and spotted the fourth member of their group. “Too much knowledge of what goes on in the Order is a dangerous thing, my friends.”

“Especially when the boss is making his own plans instead of following Mr. Basarab’s agenda,” Jimmy added in a gravelly voice. “Got the food and beer, Scarlet.” He set the two six packs and the bag against the wall.

“Thanks, Jim.” Scarlet grabbed dropped her tools and grabbed a beer and a bag of chips. “Bernie! Jim’s back with the beer!” She glanced at him. “How do you know what’s going on?”

“When I played chauffeur for Mr. Astrid, he and one of the other Order members were talking about the latest news from California. I couldn’t help overhearing what they said. It seems it was Mr. Astrid’s idea to kill Marsden, and then he sent someone to the estate sale to buy up all the jewelry and other odd knickknacks.” He drained half his bottle. “According to what Mr. Astrid, Mr. Basarab wants the ring to go to its rightful owner.

“Interesting.” Scarlet stored the information away for future reference. It never hurt to have insurance.

Bernie ran into the room and almost tripped on the crowbar Mickey had dropped on the floor. “Damn it, Mick! Watch what the hell you’re doing!”

“Sorry.” He held out a bottle to his friend.

Jim eyed the three of them. “You think we’ll find the disk here?”
